2011

Things started to look up and Century Link decided to make good with Darron and gave him a nice raise so we could start getting back on top again.  We were able to move back into a beautiful house on July 1.  It was so nice to have a yard back for the kids to play in.  They made some great new friends while we were in the apartments, but so grateful for a house to call our own.

DJ is having the good year, still struggling in school but he loves his teacher and she really does a great job with him.  DJ is wild in school, constantly up and around, can't stand still for one minute, always talking....(alot like me..oops).   I do not regret holding him back one bit.  I think it was a great decision.  When people ask what grade DJ is in, he says, "I am supposed to be in 3rd, but I got held back".  He tells EVERYONE that.  He is so funny.  He has made some great friends this year that will hopefully continue through his school years.

Morgan started Kindergarten and Loves every minute.  I never thought 2 kids would be so different, but here they are.  Morgan is so easy and quiet in school.  She is lucky enough to have the teacher that DJ had last year.  Mrs. Connie Harland.  She is the best teacher ever!!  Love her and so do all my kids!! Morgan has struggled with her alphabet sounds and was seeing someone in school to help her and give her some extra time.  I have become close friends with Mrs. Harland and when she told me this, I was shocked.  Morgan would repeat everything at home just fine...so when we went home that night, I recorded Morgan on my phone and then played it back for Mrs. Harland to let her know that Morgan did indeed know everything...I don't know if she was just not confident enough or just being too shy.  Little stinker.

This has been Morgan's big year for things to happen, although I am not sure anyone will ever out do DJ.  Morgan was playing house one day with her friend Juliette and Morgan was playing the baby.  Juliette was carrying her then accidently dropped and fell on top of her, fracturing Morgan's foot.  I was sure that Morgan was okay, but after not being able to walk on it for 2 days, I took her to the Dr and of course, we had to go to the Orthopedic.  They casted her foot...bright pink.  Pretty cool and she got to have that one for 2 weeks.  Kids heal so fast!!  It took her about another week after it was off, to get back to normal, but she was tough.  Morgan also lost her 1st tooth.  It was so loose but she wouldn't pull it out.  It was just hanging there...so gross.  At lunch, Morgan's TA got to help her pull her tooth out of her hotdog.  Morgan was so excited!!!

Porter....well, Porter decided to fall out of bed one night....I am not exactly sure what happened...he came into my room crying, I picked him up thinking he had just had a bad dream and put him back in bed.  He went right back to sleep so I didn't think anything of it....until the next morning.  I go in and there was blood everywhere.  Porter had split his eyebrow right open.  oops...bad mom moment.  I took him to the urgent care and they wouldn't treat him because it was too close to his eye so we had to go to the ER.  I went home and got Darron and took him up to Duke ER.  They gave Porter a cool stuffed Penguin that he named Mr. Popper, and put numbing medicine on his eye before they gave him all the shots, well that medicine didn't work and we ended up having to pin him down on the table to get in his 2 stitches.  Darron and I were both in tears knowing this little guy could feel everything.  He did a great job and got blue stitches!

2010

2010 continued to be a really hard year.  Darron's company, Qwest, didn't come through with what they had promised in our move and we had to move into an apartment.  Things were rough for awhile, but then Qwest was bought by Century Link and things started to look better.  Darron was such a trooper and hung in there through such a tough time.

DJ is still struggling but loving the fact that he doesn't have to have shots nearly as much anymore.  He started Lacrosse in the spring and really enjoyed it.  I don't know who enjoyed it more...Darron or DJ.  They both were so happy.

Morgan started preschool and has done wonderfully.  She loves her teachers and is making alot of new friends.

Porter was still growing like a weed and is such entertainment for all of us.

The rest of 2009

2009 - We moved from Montana, to Cary, NC. 2 weeks before we moved, DJ was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (June 11, 2009). The day after school got out and on our way to Utah for my parents to watch the kids so we could fly to NC to look at a house....DJ had wet the bed several nights in a row and Darron picked up on it so quickly...I was in denial but we decided to take him to the Dr on our way out to Utah and sure enough, Darron was right. We quickly learned how to give shots and decided that we would continue our education at Primary Childrens hospital in Utah and Darron would fly to NC by himself and I would stay with DJ. It was a tough, rough day filled with lots of tears, but grateful that it wasn't much worse. This we could control. We cried together everytime we had to give him a shot, but he was so tough. After about a week, he was doing his shots by himself. He learned really quickly how to count carbs and how to take care of himself.

We drove across the country with the 3 kids and boy, what a journey. We stopped at many places and had a great time, but it was a LONG drive and I can't say I would ever do it again! We arrived at our new home and slept on the floor for almost a week before our furniture arrived. It was like camping but with the great convenience of fast food and restaurants to eat. The kids loved running around in an empty house. When we arrived, we went to sign up DJ for 2nd grade to find out that it was a year round school, which we had never done before, AND it started in 2 days. So this year, DJ got a 3 week summer. Poor kid.

DJ had his birthday and turned 7. What a strong, strong boy. A stranger came up to us in the pharmacy one day and gave DJ a stuffed Lion and told him he had a heart of a Lion. She, too, cried with us as we shared what DJ had experienced over the last 2 months.

After starting 2nd grade, DJ was falling behind very quickly. After much discussion with the principal, his teacher and Darron and I, we decided to put DJ back in 1st grade. He was just too far behind to get caught up and we would rather him be on top then constantly struggling, especially with all his was having to deal with already with his Diabetes.

My parents were able to fly out and spend a couple of weeks with us so I could spend time at DJ's new school teaching everyone how to take care of DJ. He was the only one in the entire school with Type 1 Diabetes, so no one knew anything....I spent most of the day there because DJ was so afraid he would die at school because no one knew how to take care of him. So thankful that my parents were able to come out and help.

Well...4 weeks into school, and after moving back to 1st grade, DJ was in the Duke ER with his Diabetes. It was then that I happened to tell the Dr while we were there, that DJ was complaining that his side was hurting. I thought it was due to all the changes and anxiety that he had over the last month, but I was wrong. They checked DJ into the hospital and we had an ultrasound done to check his appendix. When we arrived back at his room, everyone was there ready to take him to have emergency surgery. He had apendicitis. Holy cow. Can this poor kid catch a break? It was a shock to all of us. I laid with him in his bed as they rolled him down to surgery...him crying, I'm trying not to cry....Darron trying not to cry....ugh, what a mess. He pulled through with flying colors and recovered really quickly. This kid is so tough...he is my hero!!!

In December, we were able to finally get DJ on an insulin pump so he didn't have to have so many shots during the day. It was awesome and he was so glad. We first tried the Ping, but with DJ being so active, the wire got in the way so we decided to go with the Omni Pod because it's wireless. DJ has a small contraption on his arm and just carries a "fanny pack" with all his stuff in it and his PDM. It's really cool.
